On October 8, 2025, Hamas accepted the first phase of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire-peace deal with Israel, halting hostilities for 72 hours to allow UN-led humanitarian aid into Gaza and the release of all 20 living Israeli hostages (plus remains of about 28 deceased) in exchange for Israel freeing approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 others detained since the war began.
